Volunteers are vital to the Friends of the Library supporting the programming for children and adults and other items not covered in the library’s regular budget. Below are our current volunteer opportunities. Please contact us at [email protected] if you are interested in volunteering.

Periodic Large Book Sales

For the large book sale events in the library conference room, help with the set-up and cleanup, and volunteer during the sale as a greeter or customer assistant/book stocker. Our sales occur twice a year: 1st week in December and the 1st week in June.

Time commitment: 2 hours per shift

Create Christmas Gift Baskets

Put together gift baskets of books and small items to sell at the Holiday Book Sale typically held in late November or early December.

Time commitment: 2 – 3 hours in mid-November

Book Sale Outdoor Sign Placement

Place outdoor signs in the assigned locations before the periodic large book sales and then remove then after the sale.

Time commitment: a few hours the 1st week in December and/or the 1st week in June

Book Sorter

For our library Book Sale Room and periodic larger book sale events, sort donated items according to categories, discard those unacceptable due to condition or being out-of-date, and replenish items in our Book Sale Room. As sorting shelves get full, pack items by category into storage boxes.

Time commitment: several hours one week a month

Book Transporters

Transport donated items packed in boxes to an off-site storage unit (Blue Skies). For periodic large Book Sale events ( 1st week in December and the 1st week in June), boxes of books are returned to the library conference room from the off-site storage unit.

Time commitment: a couple of hours a week

Hospitality

Plan special events for the Friends of the Library members, the library staff, and the public. Traditionally, this has been the staff appreciation lunch, a “coco and cookies” event after the Boone Christmas parade, and the Friends of the Library annual membership meeting.

Time commitment: each event, several hours once a year

Outreach

Promote reading and literacy by providing activities and resources in the community. Examples: visit day care centers to teach the alphabet, refresh book collections at Hospitality House and Little Free Libraries.

Time commitment: several hours once per month

Publicity and Marketing

Share information with the community using various media (Facebook, signage, webpage, articles, etc.) about the Watauga County Public Library, and the Friends of Library Book Sales and special events.

Time commitment: varies by event and media

Reading and Rolling

During the summer, collaborate with 4 rural elementary schools and the Watauga County and the Western Watauga Branch Libraries to provide books every 2 weeks to each of 55 elementary students. Deliver the books to each child’s home and return books from the previous delivery to the library.

Time commitment: several hours every 2 weeks during the summer
