InterLibrary Loan

The Watauga County Public Library participates in the InterLibrary Loan (ILL) program.

If an item you're looking for is not owned by the Appalachian Regional Library system or the wider North Carolina-wide "NC Cardinal" free borrowing system, we may be able to borrow the material from another library in the U.S., through the OCLC "WorldShare" Intelibrary Loan program.  A small one-way postage fee is generally required for this service.

You must have a current library card with borrowing privileges.

InterLibrary Loan requests are generally  not available for audio books or very new books (published within the last year). Except for books obtained from Appalachian State University, there is a nominal charge for return shipping (averages approximately $2). Oversized or heavy books may cost more to ship. It may also be difficult to obtain the following types of materials:

  • Genealogical materials
  • Materials not published in the U.S.
  • Very old or rare books
  • Very expensive books
  • Audio-visual material (including DVDs)
  • Reference materials

Please call and speak with any member of the Reference Staff at (828) 264-8784, Extension 2 to learn more about this service!
