Appalachian Regional Library Names Russell Taylor as New Director of Libraries

Following a nationwide search, the Appalachian Regional Library Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Russell Taylor as the new Director of Libraries, effective August 4, 2025.

Mr. Taylor brings over 30 years of experience in librarianship and higher education leadership to the role. He holds a Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Most recently, Mr. Taylor served as Director of Library Services at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, where he led efforts to expand access to resources and enhance library services for students and faculty. Prior to his time at A-B Tech, he spent nearly two decades at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, where he held several key leadership positions, including Library Director, Director of Academic Computing and Information Systems, and Interim Director of Career Services.

Throughout his career, Mr. Taylor has secured numerous grants to fund technology and library improvements, collaborated with architects and planning teams on a major library renovation, and contributed extensively to accreditation efforts as a reviewer for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He has also served on a wide range of internal and external committees, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to the profession of librarianship.

“I’m excited to be returning to the High Country,” said Taylor. “I look forward to working alongside the dedicated librarians and staff at Appalachian Regional Library, and I’m eager to get to know and serve the communities of Ashe, Watauga, and Wilkes Counties.”

Appalachian Regional Library is a network of libraries across northwestern North Carolina, encompassing Ashe, Watauga, and Wilkes counties. The Appalachian Regional Library nurtures individual and community growth through free and equal access to resources for reading, thinking, learning, and living. The Board looks forward to working with Mr. Taylor as he leads the library’s ongoing efforts to meet the changing needs of its patrons.
