Wilkes County Public Library is hosting a series of environmental wellness programs during the month of April to motivate, inspire, and help us sustain the health of our ‘Mother Earth.’ So, goodbye winter and hello spring! Warmer and longer days bring a renewed awareness to the beauty of nature around us. Whether you are a gardener or just enjoy the bounty, the growing season is now in its planting stage.

This year the library is working to help with hunger issues in our county by managing a community garden plot, located in Cub Creek Park. We are recruiting Garden Care Volunteers to help us maintain this outdoor space and will be sharing produce from the garden in a fresh foods fridge. This fridge is located in the library’s foyer and will offer free food once stocked. If you are interested in this project, call 336-838-2818 for information on how you can help! Growers can also access free seeds for home gardens in the little seed library upstairs at the main library and in the Traphill Branch Library.

Another thing that our gardens need is help from pollinators! Come out and learn about bees and their important work. Hive Tracks, will be visiting the library at 5:30 p.m. on April 6. Hive Tracks has created a beekeeping app that is working to make a plant-positive impact, one healthy bee at a time. Learn how local crowd sourcing is sharing environmental intelligence so that bees can be healthy and productive. Enjoy a taste of honey cake and sip on a Bees Knee’s mocktail at this special program.

In partnership with Wilkes NC Cooperative Extension, the library will be hosting a permaculture class, presented by Matthew Clay at 5:30 p.m. on April 11. Learn how to help conserve the ecosystem with this natural method of agriculture. Become empowered to grow your own produce. Space is limited, so call now to register 336) 651-7330.

If you are interested in learning more about gardening, the Friends of Wilkes Library will be featuring a sale on gardening books during their next book sale, April 13-15, at the Stone Center. In addition, the library book club is reading Seedfolks by, Paul Fleischman. This is a simply wonderful story of how a neighborhood garden grew and a community was born. Join the conversation, hosted by Mara Lynn Tugman, at 4:00 on April 18.

You may know that spring is a good time for cleaning. Environmental wellness is also about keeping your spaces supportive and nurturing. Throwing out ‘the old’ to make space for ‘the new’ is one way of decluttering and organizing. However, let us not forget about the importance of recycling. Joshua Church of Recyclable Containers, Inc. will be visiting at 5:30 p.m. on April 18 (following our Seedfolks discussion). Come, join the conversation, and help lessen the burden on our landfills by cutting down on our consumption of plastics.

Most of all, remember how when we come together, there is an abundance for all. Stop by the library and see what we have to offer. I think 'free books' and 'free food' are a perfect pairing!
