North Wilkesboro Woman’s Club Recognizes the Year of the Trail

The North Wilkesboro Woman’s Club recently donated a guidebook; Great Day Hikes on North Carolina’s Mountain to Sea Trail, to Wilkes County Public Library and the Branch at Traphill.   The local chapter of the North Carolina General Federation of Woman’s Clubs has adopted the state president’s special project of highlighting the Mountains-to-Sea-Trail.  One particular way that the North Wilkesboro Chapter is doing this is by sharing a beautiful book that is the “Official Guide from Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea-Trail.”

The NC House and Senate has passed a bill that designates 2023 as “North Carolina’s Year of the Trail.”  Club members are encouraged to donate funds, educate members, and learn about the history and culture of the Mountain-to-Sea-Trail and the communities it connects across North Carolina.  This trail stretches 1175 miles from the Great Smokey Mountains to the Outer Banks, stopping at many of our state’s most beautiful places along the way.   It connects us to nature, to diverse communities, to history, and to ourselves.

These books are especially timely with the library’s focus on environmental wellness.  It is important to spend time in nature – without digital devices – allowing the brain to rest and restore.  There will be a series of library programs hosted in coming months to address ways to stay environmentally well, and to care for our environment.  Look for special wellness books on display at the library, along with ‘Great Day Hikes.’

You can join the community of trail supporters, volunteers, and hikers, all working to build, maintain, protect, promote, and preserve our state’s Mountains to Sea Trail.

The state’s goal is to raise $11,750 during Kim Fulcher’s (president of GFWC-NC) two-year administration.  The money will pay to add kiosks along the trail, each with a nameplate saying “Donated by: General Federation Woman’s Club of North Carolina”.  The local chapter raised money with a Dimes for Doors project.  They counted every door, of every kind, throughout their houses.  That included cabinet doors, refrigerator, oven door, closets, kitchen cabinets and doors all over the house inside and outside, the garage and porch too! Each member also donated $11.75 to become a “Day Hiker”.

Donations can be raised to represent MTS miles (1175) from one end to the other.  As noted, the goal is to raise $11,750.  A small gift of $11.75 is classified as a ‘day hiker,’ $117.50 represents a ‘weekend backpacker’ and $1175.00 equals a ‘through hiker.’
