by Suzanne Moore, Wilkes County Librarian

Wilkes County Public Library is hosting a series of virtual yoga sessions by Dianne Bondy in partnership with Network of the National Library of Medicine.  Dianne is a social justice activist, author, accessible yoga teacher, and the leader of the Yoga For All movement.  Her inclusive approach to yoga empowers anyone to practice—regardless of their shape, size, ethnicity, or level of ability.

Dianne’s commitment to increasing diversity in yoga has been recognized in her work with Pennington’s, Gaiam, and the Yoga & Body Image Coalition, as well as in speaking engagements at Princeton, Duke, University of Buffalo and UC Berkeley on Yoga, Race, and Diversity. Her writing is published in Yoga and Body Image Volume 1, Yoga Renegades, and Yes Yoga Has Curves. You can also find Dianne online at yogaforalltraining.com and yogaforeveryone.tv.

There will be two sessions is at 2:00 p.m. on February 16 and 23 at the library’s community room, and you can register online to participate from home if you prefer. (see the library’s website calendar for registration, or call 336-838-2818 ext241)

Each session focuses on Redefining your understanding: Racism and you. Dianne will unpack social messaging and socialization around body image using practical methods and strategies that you can easily employ in everyday life. You will learn how to reclaim a more powerful understanding of who you are and how you show up in the world. You will leave the interactive discussion and asana practice with actionable tools that will help you take your yoga off the mat and into your community.

Another powerful session with writer Donia Simmons is planned for February 21.  Donia is an inspirational speaker and the first author to be featured in a series of virtual talks, hosted by the library in partnership with NAMI High Country (National Alliance on Mental Illness).  Donia will be sharing her experiences and talking about her book, COURAGE: Walking Out of Our Cage (Unlocking the Power Within).

Afraid of your big dreams? Paralyzed by what others may think or say? Uncertain of your purpose? Donia Simmons can help you unlock the doors to the cages of your life through small, simple lifestyle changes. She will personally guide you through tips, steps and strategies that help inspire, motivate, and empower you.  You will learn how the words you speak, believe, and follow through with action have the power to release the courage that lives within you. Make the decision today to walk out of your cage to be the adaptive, transformative leader you were predestined for. YOU hold the keys.

Donia’s program begins at 6:30 p.m. via zoom on February 21.  You can register to attend from home, or you can join us in the library.  Check the library’s website or call 336-838-2818 for more details.
