Reading Resolutions and the Reading Trap

Reading Resolutions and the Reading Trap

Tuesday, 28 December 2021 10:49

A New Year is like a clean slate.  Many follow the tradition of setting resolutions.  Plans are made to diet, exercise, and save money.  While you are busy focusing on your 2022 improvement plan, don’t forget about reading.  Joseph Addison, a 17th century essayist, is known for the popular quote: “Reading is to the mind, as exercise is to the body.”   In other words, just as exercise stimulates your body to make you stronger … reading stimulates your mind and makes you smarter.  Reading is great exercise for your brain, as you imagine scenarios and follow dialogue.  Another way to compliment a ‘saving money’ resolution is to visit the library, rather than the book or video store.  Remember, the library loans books and movies for free!

And now, introducing The Reading Trap, Wilkes County Library’s newest book club!  This group’s name isn’t meant to cause intimidation, not at all.  Organized in the Traphill area of the county and because a good book is waiting to lure you in . . . The Reading Trap is where it’s at.  Regardless of where you might live, come on out and enjoy good books and conversation at Roaring Rivers Vineyard.  The book club will meet at 5:00 p.m. (493 Brewer Mill Road, Traphill, NC 28685), every first Thursday.

Participating in a book club is a good way to combine an activity like reading with friendship.  There are multiple benefits to belonging to a book club.  You meet interesting people at book clubs. Some good books of which you may have not heard of get discussed. You read things that you wouldn’t otherwise read. Sometimes it is sheer fun just to chat. All book clubs – no matter how serious, involve some chit chat. And that’s how it should be. It’s nice to have mix of men and women in the club. Books bring you closer to people. We thrive on friendships as we grow older. And book clubs are a great excuse to make and keep friends. When you join a club, for the sake of discussion, it gives you a push to finish reading few books.

Pre-registration or reading ahead is not required for joining The Reading Trap.  Just save-the-date and stop by.  In January the highlighted read is Leonardo Sciascia’s crime novel To Each His Own.  This book was also released as a film “We Still Kill the Old Way” and can be viewed on Prime TV.

Call 336-838-2818 ext 241 for more information about The Reading Trap and to sign-up for monthly emails about selected and recommended reads.   I’m looking forward to reading lots of books and sharing conversation with friends this year.
