It’s that time of year when we pause to recognize books that have been challenged or banned—and to reflect on how dangerous censorship can be. As a librarian and lifelong learner, I proudly call myself an intellectual freedom fighter. I deeply believe in the saying that “free people read freely.” I don’t read every book to adopt its beliefs or values; I read to understand the world beyond my own experience. Each book, even one I may disagree with, offers a window into another person’s truth. Protecting the freedom to read isn’t just about defending books—it’s about safeguarding curiosity, empathy, and the right to think for ourselves.

This October, Wilkes County Public Library will partner with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and local organizations to host a series of community events focused on support, recovery, and open conversation. All events are free and open to the public.

What do a barefoot cook stirring cloves and cinnamon in Bahia and the son of a gun-inventing genius in New England have in common? More than you’d think. Both Jorge Amado’s lush novel and Hiram Percy Maxim’s witty memoir show how personality, passion, and humor can shake loose the legacies that try to pin us down.

In celebration of historian David McCullough’s July 7th birthday, The Reading Trap, our branch library’s book club, embarked on an ambitious literary journey: a “BIG Book Read” of Truman, McCullough’s Pulitzer Prize–winning biography of President Harry S. Truman. Known for his meticulous research, vivid storytelling, and ability to bring historical figures to life, McCullough invites readers into the heart of Truman’s world with a narrative that is both enlightening and engaging. Our group was eager to take on the challenge—and the nearly 1,100 pages—of this sweeping portrait of America’s 33rd president.

The Wilkes County Board of Commissioners has approved a budget for the fiscal year 2025-26 that reduces library funding by 9%. This reduction equates to $73,404 less than the library’s approved budget for 2024-25. Due to our limited staffing capacity, the library will reduce its operating hours by five hours each week, along with a decrease in staff hours. These changes are essential to maintaining core library services.

As spring turns to summer, we pause to honor two literary figures whose birthdays fall in May and June: the brilliant Katherine Anne Porter and the ever-enchanting Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Though they wrote in different languages and styles, both authors left lasting imprints on world literature with works that explore memory, mortality, and the invisible threads that bind us.

This summer, Wilkes County Public Library is going green—and we mean it literally!

We’re inviting you to roll up your sleeves, grab a trowel, and join us in the garden as we launch our Library Community Gardening Project! Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or you’ve never touched a tomato plant in your life, this is your chance to grow something meaningful, not just vegetables, but community, connection, and a little more sunshine in your life.

It seems fitting that this book, published in 1968, has been chosen to celebrate the birthday of Oles Honchar (born April 3, 1918), especially given the recent political developments regarding our country's withdrawal of support for the war in Ukraine. While Honchar’s book, "The Cathedral," is not a war novel, it is significant to note that it was banned in Ukraine during the Soviet regime.

'Love Your Library' Open House

by Suzanne Manners, County Librarian

During February, don’t forget to show your love for your library! This month, libraries are nationally celebrated for their value in the community. You may be familiar with the saying, “It’s not a house; it’s a home…” In a similar vein, we can say, “It’s not just a building that houses books; it’s the heart of the community!”

February is a month that celebrates the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States. Additionally, we commemorate the literary birthday of Henry Adams, who was born on February 16, 1838. The connection between Henry Adams and Lincoln is noteworthy, as Henry lived during Lincoln's presidency and had access to firsthand accounts from that time. Furthermore, Henry comes from an extraordinary presidential lineage; his great-grandfather, John Adams, served as the second president, while his grandfather, John Quincy Adams, was the sixth president.

Wilkes County Public Library is excited to promote "Food for Fines" during the week of January 13-18.  At this time, library patrons are encouraged to bring undamaged and unexpired, boxed, or canned non-perishable food items to the library. We also welcome donations of pet food, as dogs and cats need to eat too!

This month's featured author is John Lukacs, born on January 31, 1924. His book, Five Days in London, May 1940, recounts Winston Churchill's initial days in office as Britain's newly elected Prime Minister. Lukacs is known for his ability to portray complex events and situations with remarkable clarity.

A library renovation project begins in mid-October and is expected to be completed in early 2025.   The improvements will utilize the current space to expand services and modernize appearance.   Most importantly the project includes the installation of an upstairs bathroom.   The original building plan only provided restroom facilities for patrons on the main floor.  Everyone is looking forward to having a bathroom upstairs!   Other renovation highlights include a new stage (wired for sound) to hold concerts and programs and a podcast studio for staff and patron use.

Wilkes County Public Library and Friends are organizing a special event to honor National Poetry Month. The event will take place on April 30, featuring Jaki Shelton Green, North Carolina’s Poet Laureate. Starting at 4:00 p.m., Wilkes County Friends of the Library will provide refreshments and host Green for a Meet & Greet in the library. At 5:30 p.m., Green will read aloud her poems and talk about her work as the state poet, followed by a brief Q&A session. Suzanne Moore, Wilkes County Librarian, said, “We are proud to have our State Poet here to help us wrap up the end of National Poetry Month. She has some powerful stories to tell with her poems and hearing them spoken adds even more depth and beauty to the written words.”
